Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Following comments received on the proposed Revised Schedule of Fees for applications made to the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), made in terms of Section 25(2)(l) of the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) and published in the Government Gazette of 22 July 2022, SAHRA hereby publishes the final Revised Schedule of Fees for Applications made to SAHRA. Applications for provision of services submitted to the South African Heritage Resources Authority (SAHRA), in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) must be accompanied by a payment of the appropriate fee, taking effect from 1 January 2023

Application for condonation of unlawful work on generally 'Protected' site that is older than 60 years, Sarnia Station, 38 Stapleton Road, Pinetown, 3615. Work includes the construction of the following structures without proper heritage permissions: unlawful Station Building, unlawful Ticket Office, unlawful Covered Seating Structure, unlawful Uncovered Seating Structure, unlawful Entrance Structure.

Expanded_Motivation: 

Sarnia Station is on the District 1 Line of the "Old Natal Main line". The District 1 line was first opened in 1878 but Sarnia Station was not on the original line in 1880 (as seen in the steam rail timetable for December 1880). The station is older than 60 years, but contains no structures that are older than 60 years A description of the illegal work on the site is outlined below: Station building (age unknown. Estimated 1970s or later) -New masonry building with external cavity wall and brick & plaster detail on external walls just above lintol level. (See Pics) -Brick lintols used over windows. Walls are plastered and painted. -Timber doors with broad, 90mm frames -Aluminium windows and doors (1 timber door) -Timber rafters and battens with IBR steel roof sheeting Ticket Office (age unknown. Estimated 1970s) -New masonry building with external cavity wall and brick detail on external walls just above lintel level. (See Pics) -Brick lintels used over windows. Face Brick from detail above lintol level below, and plastered and painted from above detail – appears as a ring beam / modern element -Aluminium windows -Timber rafters and battens with asbestos/ fibre cement roof sheeting Covered Seating Structure (recently constructed) -Masonry seating structure with concrete slab for sitting. Back and side rest walls to timber beam height- painted and plastered. Openings in East and West side walls - Masonry piers on East and West ends of structure, plastered and painted, supporting a timber beam which supports timber rafters and battens on which corrugated roof sheeting sits. Seating structure - uncovered (recently constructed) Masonry, face brick plinth for seating with concrete slab Entrance Structure -Galvanised streel frame structure using circular steel hollow sections with gates. Painted. -Partially-covered by a corrugated sheeting roof with timber trusses and battens
